MSD of Wabash County MSD of Wabash County (MSDWC) serves 2250 students in the southern two thirds of Wabash County (surrounding the Wabash City Schools) covering 292 square miles in a rural/small town environment. Northfield Junior-Senior High School (7-12), Sharp Creek Elementary (4-6), and Metro North Elementary (K-3) are north of Wabash, while Southwood Junior-Senior High School (7-12) and Southwood Elementary (K-6) are to the south of town. MSDWC includes the small communities of Roann, Urbana, Lagro, LaFontaine, Richvalley, Lincolnville, and Somerset. The free and reduced rate for the district is 40%. We are in our second year of students each having a device for learning. Students in grades 3-12 each have a MacBook Air while students in K-2 have iPads. This year we applied for the opportunity to have scheduled eLearning Days with the hope of possibly using them as a replacement for weather-caused cancellations in future years. Mother Nature brought an unusually challenging winter causing that timeline to be condensed, and we were fortunate to be selected to pilot non-scheduled eLearning Days. We have now successfully completed four planned and three weather related eLearning Days. One of our goals for scheduled eLearning days is to provide professional development to all MSDWC staff. On our first two eLearning days we planned appropriate learning opportunities for secretaries, custodians, bus drivers, paraprofessionals, guidance, cooks, and teachers. For many of these groups this was the first time that we were able to bring them all together for job appropriate training. In addition to new learning, teachers have time blocked to work collaboratively by department/grade level and to respond/interact with their students. During the unplanned, weather related eLearning Days, teachers worked from home either interacting with students or engaging in personal professional learning.
